It might be tempting to dismiss the Los Angeles rapper Afroman as a one hit wonder. His unavoidable stoner anthem "Because I Got High" tends to hit you in three phases; first it's the most hilarious thing you've ever heard; then it's the most annoying thing you've ever heard; then it's funnier than ever. But what else does Afroman have to offer? The hungry hustler is certainly unique in today's hip hop arena. With all the gangsters and thugs hating on each other, Afroman's deliberately cartoony novelty image helps him coast along under the radar. On Afroman records like "Drunk N High" and "The Good Times," the track listings tell the whole story. Songs like "Crazy Rap" and "I Drive Better Drunk" showcase Afroman's trademark laid-back delivery over wah-wah guitar samples and strung out beats. Afroman is also a vocal critic of the modern recording industry, releasing his records on obscure independent labels and utilizing peer-to-peer file sharing software to generate buzz. He offers himself as an example of how to drop out of the recording industry rat race. Fans following along also know that Afroman may or may not be a born again Christian. On his track "God Has Smiled On Me" and the last verse of most verses of "Crazy Rap", he swears off smoking, drinking and girls. However, while on a British TV interview Afroman stated that, although he has found God, he's going to be the best drinking, smoking, woman-chasing Christian that the world's ever seen.
