Spears' story is almost American folklore a talented, ambitious kid with supportive parents and strong Christian values goes from rags to riches in a matter of months. Britney's debut record, One More Time, cut through the watered-down grunge and generic hip hop cluttering the radio at the time. After hooking up with reclusive Swedish production genius Max Martin, Spears walked away with the complex, provocative synth-pop single Baby One More Time. No one knew quite what the doe eyed popette in a Catholic school girl kilt was asking for with her "hit me baby" lyric, but it was a lightening rod for instant attention. It didn't hurt that it got asses on the dance floor and tortured karaoke singers worldwide with it's soaring, sultry vocals. Today, Britney Spears' debut has sold a staggering fourteen million copies. Not satisfied with one unprecedented success, Spears released Oops! I Did It Again, which featured another catchy title single and sold a record breaking 1.3 million copies in it's first week alone. Endorsement deals with Pepsi and risqu�, high-profile live performances appearing in a shimmering, nude-colored bodysuit at the 2000 MTV awards and gyrating with a stupefied albino python at a subsequent MTV performance solidified Spears' popularity. Gossip columns spilled gallons of ink speculating on her relationship with 'N Sync star Justin Timberlake and hardly an interview went by where Spears failed to mention her faith and her virginity. However, artistically Spears' career peaked with her second album. Since then, her private life and not her music has taken center stage in the increasingly crazy media circus known as the Britney Show. After breaking up with Justin, she admitted to lying about her virginity in multiple interviews. She began taking Kabbalah lessons with Madonna. She married a high school friend in a quickie Vegas wedding, only to get it annulled days later. Britney Spears was also married to her backup dancer, Kevin Federline and has recently given birth to a second child.
