White southern rapper Bubba Sparxx waves the flag for Southern hip hop and has been instrumental in pioneering the sub genre of country rap. They said it couldn't be done, but Bubba Sparxx hit singles prove the critics wrong. A native of Georgia, Bubba Sparxx (born Warren Anderson Mathis) grew up in a rural neighborhood where his closest neighbor was over a half mile away. It's an amazing testament to the broad-reaching power of hip hop that said neighbor was the one to introduce young Bubba to hip hop, after receiving rap tapes mailed to him form New York City. Bubba first recorded with local Southern hip hop playa Lil Devil, but the two egos crashed and the partnership was dissolved. His self produced and released album Dark Days, Bright Nights was an intriguing mix of genre bending hot beats and hot licks, acoustic guitar samples being prominent. It caught the attention of Interscope Records, who re-released Dark Days, Bright Nights to the national market. The album was critically acclaimed but sales were only modest. Bubba Sparxx's follow-up, 2003's Deliverance was a collaboration with fellow southerners Timbaland and Organized Noize. The beats-featuring lots of sampled acoustic guitar-couldn't be tighter, and Deliverance made many music critics' top ten lists. However, the fusion of genres may have confused the record buying public, and after a strong debut sales were surprisingly low. Still, Bubba Sparxx went on to score his biggest commercial hit with 2006's The Charm and more traditional hit club tracks like "Ms. New Booty" with the Yin Yang Twins and "Heat It Up."
