Ronan Tynan Classical music is a broad term referring to music produced in, or rooted in the traditions of, European Art and concert music, encompassing a broad period stretching back over 1000 years up to the present day. Forms of this music developed throughout, but reached its height in creativity and complexity between the 16th and 19th centuries. The development of classical music can be broken down by nine separate styles chronologically into Ancient music, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, 20th century, and neo-classical. The average listener will tend fit all classical composers into the heading of ‘classical’. These musical masters can be better understood when fit into their respective genres within classical music. Antoni Vivaldi, Albinoni, Bach, and Handel are all examples of Baroque composers of the 16th and 17th centuries. Haydn, Salieri, and Mozart are generally from the classic period of the 18th century. Finally, Beethoven, Paganini, Schubert , Rossini, Chopin, Wagner, Verdi, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Puccini can all be described as romantic composers, all of which wrote music during the late 18th and 19th centuries. Classical music has not only been in soundtracks of modern films and television events, but also serves as fitting accompaniment during life’s difficulties. A great classical composition can stimulate the emotions to feel joy or sadness like no other genre of music. Classical music can be seen as the grandfather of modern music, making it what it is today. It has even been said by some researchers that listening to Mozart actually makes you smarter.
