About David Haas

David Haas is from Eagan, Minnesota, where he is the director of The Emmaus Center for Music, Prayer and Ministry - he is also Campus Minister - Artist in Residence at Benilde-St. Margaret's High School in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Highly regarded as one of the preeminent liturgical composers in the English-speaking world, David has produced over thirty original collections of liturgical music and is active as a conference and workshop speaker, retreat leader, author, cantor, concert performer, and recording artist. He was one of the project consultants for the revised hymnals, Gather and Gather Comprehensive, and in 1991 was nominated for a Grammy Award for the recording I Shall See God (GIA). David has traveled throughout the United States, Canada, the British Isles, Europe, Australia, the Bahamas, and Israel as a concert performer, keynote and workshop speaker, and retreat leader in the areas of liturgical music, liturgy, prayer, spirituality, youth ministry, and religious education. He is the founder and director of Music Ministry Alive!, a national liturgical music formation program for high school and college students, and has been active as a team member for the North American Forum on the Catechumentate. David's most recent liturgical projects include An Echo of Faith (GIA), Do This in Memory of Me (GIA), Before I Was Born (GIA), We Give You Thanks (GIA) and Star Child (GIA), a collection of music for Christmas. The collections entitled Who Calls You by Name, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (GIA) provide an ongoing series of music for Christian Initiation. David has collaborated with Thomas Morris on a cassette series of talks on Initiation entitled Christian Initiation- Liturgical, Catechetical and Musical Dimensions (St. Anthony Messenger Press). His live recording, Glory Day, is not only a full-length feature video, but double compact disc as well (published with GIA and St. Anthony Messenger Press). It has received high acclaim in North America and beyond. Together with Bonnie Faber, he has produced the video series With Every Note I Sing- The Ministry of the Cantor (GIA). David's music has appeared in many hymnals and anthologies. As an author, David's articles have appeared in Pastoral Music, Modern Liturgy, Catechumenate, The GIA Quarterly, and he was one of the contributing authors for A Catechumenate Needs Everybody (Liturgy Training Publications). David has authored eight books on liturgy, music ministry, prayer, and spirituality. Known for his books of prayers like Psalm Prayers (St. Anthony Messenger Press) and With Every Note I Sing (GIA), he also has a two-volume series of prayers for the liturgical year entitled Praying with the Word (St. Anthony Messenger Press) and Dear God...Prayers for Children (Crossroad Publications) as well as a collaboration with Robert Piercy entitled Walking by Faith (GIA and Harcourt Religion Publishers). His most recent books are Prayers Before an Awesome God- The Psalms for Teenagers (St. Mary's Press), Music and the Mass- A Guide for Ministers of Music (LTP Publications), and The River of Hope- A Vision of Faith and Ministry (Crossroad). He has collaborated with Sr. Helen Prejean on a video education program on the death penalty, Death No More (Harcourt), and is featured on a new video program on the psalms, Teach Us to Pray- Praying the Psalms (St. Anthony Messenger Press). Together with Michael Joncas and Marty Haugen, David received the outstanding Alumni award from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul in 1997.
