Post-punk disco act Franz Ferdinand are the biggest thing to come out of Scotland since kilts and bagpipes. The gaunt quartet specialize in rough, driving drum-and-bass rhythms mixed with arch, embittered lyrics. The boys met up while playing gigs around Glasgow's thriving pub rock scene-guitarist Alex Kapranos and bassist Robert Hardy were already interested in starting a band when they hooked up with local drummer Paul Thomson. The old, working class city of Glasgow offered plenty of opportunities for the arty pranksters-some of their earliest gigs were rave-like affairs held at an abandoned local warehouse and a decrepit Victorian- era manner house. They brought their collective art school backgrounds and their enduring love of dance music to their self-titled debut album, Franz Ferdinand, and their 2004 disc quickly climbed the charts and earned the group play on dance floors around the world. The massive, lurching beats on the single "Take Me Out" were a guaranteed, slow-burn powder keg on the charts and their stark, jittery guitar work kept the dancing spazzy and spontaneous. Anticipation was high for their follow-up LP, You Could Have It So Much Better. And Franz Ferdinand totally lived up to the hype-their second album was a more polished collection of slick, New Wave beats paying tribute to classic dance-punk icons like Blondie and The Cars . With their single "Do You Want To" Franz Ferdinand let the world know that they're more than just a fad; they're here to make you rock out on the dance floor.
