Gorillaz the band are a lot of things-a post-apocalyptic zombie hip hop band, a virtual phenomenon and an evolving musical art project. A collaboration between brit-pop band Blur's lead singer Damon Albarn and underground comic artist/ Tank Girl-creator Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz have collaborated with production stars like old school MC Del tha Funkee Homosapien and hot mash-up king DJ Dangermouse. The sound is a totally eclectic genre mix-up and the look is anime gone goth. The video for their first smash single, the driving and ominous "Clint Eastwood" showed the animated band members battling a resurrected army of red-eyed zombie gorillas. The album Gorillaz earned the band the unique title of Best Selling Virtual Band in The Guinness Book of World Records. Follow-up singles included the big brass party jam "Rock the House," the funky organ beat "19-2000" and the spooky "Tomorrow Comes Today." The band's style is a fusion of everything cool; future beat hip hop one minute and raw rock n' roll the next. Rabid fans follow the band's exploits over their meticulously put-together website-you can learn the specs of guitarist Noodles' winnebego or check the band's hotmail accounts. The band answered the question of how they'd tour live by playing behind silhouette screens and projected animation to sold out applause. Their second album, Demon Days, was produced by Danger Mouse and saw the animated band getting even funkier by hiring a children's choir and collaborating with De La Soul. Lead-off single "Feel Good Inc." was a smash. Gorillaz continue to engage their fans with online treasure hunts and pranks-most recently bass guitarist Murdoc has set up a paternity test on the "Who's The Daddy" testing site and they are rumored to be in collaboration with eccentric film auteur Terry Gilliam for a Gorillaz movie.
