You might think you're the consummate grump-you kick puppies and snarl at small children-but just see if you're heart doesn't melt a little around Holiday time. Whatever it is you remember so fondly about the holidays-dreamy days spent playing new video games and getting a little loopy off the smell of pine needles, playing football with your cool older cousins before a huge Thanksgiving dinner, running around like a maniac looking for Hannukah presents or dressing up like a freak and terrorizing your crazy neighbors and eating all their candy on Halloween - you have to admit it's great to take a break from everyday life. Whatever your favorite holiday is, it's definitely got an anthem. Christmas is obviously the easiest. Earlier and earlier, radios began carpet bombing the air waves with carols and just try to deny your Pavlovian response to go hug your neighbor and buy a wreath. Songs like "Deck the Halls," "I'm Dreaming of A White Christmas," I'll Be Home For Christmas," "Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire" and "We Three Kings" are just a few of the classic carols that instantly conjure up happy ghosts of Christmas past. Or if the old guard is just a little too cheesy, try modern updates like "Grandma got Run-over By A Reindeer" or "Santa Baby." But moving past the obvious, if you like to get in touch with your inner monster, Halloween is probably your favorite day of the year. Classics include "The Monster Mash" or the theme from "The Adams Family," but lately the Danny Elfman score to Tim Burton's cult smash The Nightmare Before Christmas has come to embody the musical spirit of the season as well as anything else. Or if Hannukah (Chanukah?) is your holiday, you already know the words to "The Dreidel Song" and "Havah Nagilah" but the current revival of klezmer bands offers a modern take on the Feast of Lights. Whatever holidays you love, there's a song out there for you!
