South African jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela got his start as a teenager in the 1950s, playing in local bands. After years of increasing success, he joined Jazz Epistle Verse 1--the first South African jazz band to make a full-length recording. In 1961, Masekela was exiled from apartheid-torn South Africa, and settled in the U.S., where his career really took off. Embraced by the jazz and pop cognoscenti, he recorded many albums and had a hit in 1968 with the instrumental "Grazing in the Grass." In the late '80s, Masekela produced the popular Broadway musical SERAFINA!, joined Paul Simon's tour in support of GRACELAND, and scored another hit with the anti-apartheid song "Bring Him Back Home." He continues to tour, record, and act as an outspoken opponent of apartheid and other civil injustices.
