With Latino immigrants spreading out all over the globe, Latin music has influenced and been influenced by a broad range of styles and genres. Starting with native indigenous styles, one finds everything from samba and rumba to the passionate flamenco to bolero to charanga. Regional styles, like the Dominican Republic’s joyful and lively merengue style and Brazilian musicians practically defined the term “chill” with the lush, liquid sounds of bossa nova. Today, neo-bossa nova star Bebel Gilberto—daughter of bossa nova icon Astrid Gilberto—is a standard in trendy lounges and clubs. Crossover Latin pop stars like Ricky Martin and Shakira went platinum in the Latin pop explosion of the late 1990’s, paving the way for international celebrities like Enrique Iglesias and Christina Aguilera, many of whom record albums in Spanish and English language editions. Meanwhile, Latino’s have been putting their own spin on Western styles, often incorporating traditional elements like accordion or clava and changing the lyrical themes. In Rock en Espanol, musicians turned up the volume on electric guitars and bands like Caifanes and Jaguares filled arenas with their epic, and often political, sound. Lately reggaeton has exploded, giving Puerto Rico a genre to call its own—mixing Jamaican dancehall rhythm with hip hop beats and Spanish raps. Fusion bands are exploding at an alarming rate—from New York’s salsa-ska act King Chango to France’s eclectic international superstar Manu Chao, Latin music is sure to increasingly dominate the pop scene.
