Led Zeppelin is one of the most celebrated and famous rock bands of our time. Formed from members of the Yardbirds, Jimmy Page and Hobbstweedle singer Robert Plant took Led Zeppelin to legendary heights. Not only have Led Zeppelin established the format for Album Oriented Rock, they influenced everything from heavy metal to Hip-Hop. Led Zeppelin headed out for their first American tour in 1969 after signing a contract with Atlantic Records. Two months after the release of their debut album in January 1969, they climbed to the top of the charts. The sophomore release, Led Zeppelin II came out soon after in October 1969 and spent several weeks at number one. Every album after was met with critical acclaim, securing Led Zeppelin's status as modern musical heroes. Led Zeppelin IV is one of the best selling albums of all time. With countless hits, some singles were so popular, such as "Stairway to Heaven" that people have been banned from singing or playing these songs publicly! The band broke up in 1980 after Drummer John Bonham's death, and band members have continued on to various side projects. Page and Plant even reunited in a 1999 MTV special.
