The blue-eyed Mexican pop crooner Luis Miguel is one of the best-selling musical artists Mexico has ever seen. With his lady-killing grin and passionate vocal delivery, Miguel has sold over 60 million records, making him one of the best selling Spanish language artists ever. His classic, romantic ballads and suave charm earn him comparisons like "the Mexican Frank Sinatra" and his popular nickname is "el Sol," "the Sun," a reference to his radiant smile. However, unlike the gregarious Sinatra who rarely met a photographer he didn't mug for, Miguel keeps his privacy closely guarded, eschewing the red carpet for low-profile backdoor entrances when he even attends awards shows at all. He avoids interviews except on special occasions and never answers intrusive questions about his personal life. Because of that, his background is something of a mystery. Even his actual country of birth is not clear-in the mid-90's, a rumor sprung up that he was not born in Mexico, as assumed, but rather in Puerto Rico and emigrated at a young age. He was the son of popular Spanish singer Luisito Rey and the Italian-American actress Marcella Basteri. Miguel's mother disappeared suddenly in 1987 and here whereabouts are unknown, a fact that may contribute to the singer's intense desire for privacy. Luis recorded his first album in 1981 with 1+1-2 Enemarados, released by EMI Mexico. On the strength of that material, he launched a Latin American tour and impressed audiences immediately with his professional level of showmanship. Some of Luis Miguel's signature singles include "Me Gustas Tal Como Eres," "Noi Ragazzi Di Oggi" and "Antorcha de Plata."
