Like the subjects in many of his songs, god Ozzy Osbourne is unkillable. The English singer has had success with his groundbreaking band Black Sabbath, as a solo artist then, for a third act, as a reality TV celebrity. Ozzy has been candid about his clinical depression and, as a young man, he found comfort in his music. Black Sabbath started life in the late'60's, when hippie psyachadelic music was in fashion. The band began playing driving blues rock and singing about the bleak quality of local life in suburban England, but their sound grew darker quickly. The band have since said they were inspired one night to become "music's answer to horror films" and the new direction can also be attributed to drummer Tony Iommi's growing interest in black magic. Sabbath pretty much drew the blueprint for heavy metal as we know it. employing down-tuning for a lower sound and singing about dangerous and frightening topics like Satanism and drugs. But the drugs took their toll on the band-Ozzy claims to have taken LSD every day for two years-and, after releasing riff classics "War Pigs" and "Iron Man," Ozzy was asked to leave. He fell into a period of deep depression and substance abuse, but was saved by the young Sharon Arden, daughter of Black Sabbath manager Don Arden. Sharon got Ozzy working and his solo albums became instant metal classics-Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman and Bark At the Moon were all full of killer riffs and brutal lyrics. Ozzy Osbourne went on to marry Sharon, and the couple starred in their own, eye-popping reality TV show documenting their eccentric family life.
