Did anything worthwhile happen in the 90s? Lets take a stroll down memory lane and see. Culturally, the 1990s is remembered for somewhat of a re-liberalization of pop culture. There was a point in this decade (before music was bought online) when we stopped walking to the cassette tape section in the music stores and opted for CD’s. TV sitcoms reached a peak in popularity, such as Seinfeld (1989-1998), Friends (1994-2004), and the animated sitcom The Simpsons (1989-present). Heavy metal died and grunge music, thanks to Nirvana, Pearl Jam and a slew of others, inspired an entire generation of mainstream rock music. It continues to be a major influence on rock music today. Boy Bands made a comeback and became a cultural phenomenon towards the end of the decade. Imagine a time back when the concept of electricity was just being thought about. Talk about the dark ages. Now imagine the world without the Internet. When the 90s started, hardly anyone had computers; by the end of the decade, we were downloading music on Napster. Hip-hop culture boomed; by the end of the decade, hip-hop was as popular as rock and roll. Snoop, Dr. Dre, Cypress Hill, Biggie Smalls, and Tupac all come to mind as innovators. Reality television explodes on MTV with the popularity of The Real World (1992-); along with Road Rules (1995-), these shows remained popular throughout the 1990s. Video games become more advanced and popular. Rivals Nintendo and Sega dominated the early '90s and Sony Playstation and Nintendo 64 had their debut in 1995. Pro Basketball was at a peak that is still unrivaled today with stars like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, David Robinson, and Patrick Ewing. The later half of the decade saw two sensational media stories with the controversial OJ Simpson trial and the saucy Clinton sex scandal. Well, that about sums up the 90s. We had video games, hip-hop, reality television, Simpsons (two of them) and scandals. Hmm, wonder if anything has really changed.
