The beats were golden, the rhymes were sharp, the shoes were Adidas and the sounds were the freshest thing the nation had heard in awhile. It’s hard to believe that kids chilling out and seeing who could talk faster on New York City street corners and in dance clubs in the late 1970’s and early 80’s could have imagined that their hobby would be embraced by the mainstream and go on to spawn a multi-billion dollar industry. Old school began with the invention of breakbeat DJing, when local party DJs like Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash would find the drum breaks on old funk records and scratch them up on the turntables, cutting them into more danceable rhythms. Eventually the MCs started rapping over the beats, usually encouraging dancers to party harder—hip hop battling also evolved when different DJs got together to compare skills. Since it was originally inextricably tied to contemporary pop records, the fledgling genre developed along with the Top 40 charts, sampling disco, soul and funk records. The Sugarhill Gang were the first rappers to sample their own live band. Limited technology kept the beats relatively simple by today’s standards, and old school hip hop’s party origins kept the lyrics straight forward too. It wasn’t until Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five released their anthem “The Message” that hip hop got a social conscious and became the voice of young, black, disenfranchised youth. The song’s trademark synthesizer line and classic chorus and lyrics are consistently sampled by modern rappers as a sign of tribute. Other stone cold old school rap classics include Kurtis Blow’s “The Breaks,” Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” and The Sequence’s “Funk You Up.”
