Rap never felt more like a down home party than with the music of the Dirty South. Blending hip hop with a certain Je ne sais what-what, artists under the Dirty South genre are not afraid of taking the hip hop formula to the nth degree. That means lyrics typically dealing with flashy cars, bling, parties and ladies galore. It could be a fantasy, but in that moment you step into the club, that fantasy becomes real. This is not to say that Dirty South music doesn’t portray the actual lifestyle and processes of the artists; to the contrary, it talks about relationships, coming-of-age, neighborhood glories and struggle. But it plugs in its own in-your-face lingo and attitude that fit right under the hip hop wing. The bouncy tunes turn southern clubs into something of a celebration. The term Dirty South was coined by Atlanta rapper Goodie Mob, and it was an Atlanta-based scene (inspired by rappers from all over the south) that quickly picked up the message and spread throughout the south. Outkast, also from Atlanta, is the quintessential Dirty South group. In the mid-1990s, they along with Goodie Mob and Organized Noize developed into the Dungeon Family hip hop collective. They released seven albums which all reached Platinum status or multiple Platinum status. With their 2003 album, Speakerboxx/The Love Below, Outkast truly created a Dirty South classic accessible to the mainstream in the song “Hey Ya” Other Dirty South artists of note include Arrested Development, Chamillionaire, Cash Money Millionaires, Ludacris, Lil’ Jon, Master P, Missy “Misdeamonor” Elliot, Mystikal, Nappy Roots, Slim Thug, and Trick Daddy.
