Top Alt-Indie artists
This generalised term can encompass a massive selection of musicians and bands. With origins stretching back to the 80’s this genre can’t be simply classified by an abbreviation of the words alternative and independent separated by a forward slash. Every generation has its array of alternative and independent musicians, but only since the late 80’s have the terms been used to describe distinct genres of music. The name "alternative" was coined in the 1980s to describe punk rock inspired bands on independent record labels that didn't fit into the mainstream genres of the time.
The 1990’s saw the success of “grunge” bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Jane’s Addiction (who incidentally coined the term “alternative nation.”) The Alternative genre, ironically, became the most popular genre of music. So enter indie… ever evolving, “Indie rock” first tended to described artists who were talented, with an audience but unsigned. Then it began to describe those who were signed by small independent record labels rather than major record labels. Now, mostly bought by the major record labels, the independent labels live as smaller branches of the major record labels. This can be a good thing. Unknown bands can now reach a wider audience and get more exposure without relying on word of mouth and “guerilla marketing.” But truly independent bands like Neutral Milk Hotel are holding down the more intelligent, folkie, side of indie. In the recent years, the passing of Elliott Smith rocked the indie world. But there’s still great bands out there. Start with The Killers, or The Shins. Try Babyshambles from the UK. Good indie music isn’t just limited to the States. You will find yourself in a world of music that is almost your own. Unfortunately (and sometimes fortunately) the only truly, I mean truly alt/indie bands that exist are still in the garage, and no one can quite hear them…yet.
