Foo Fighters Rock n' roll is here to stay. For over 50 years, the guitar-drenched rebel music has mutated and evolved, but the core remains a kicking back beat, some hot riffs and a passionate singer with a love for trouble. Starting with the up-tempo boogie woogie blues fusion of artists like Jerry Lee Lewis ("Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On") and Lee Price ("Stagger Lee") drove teens in bobby sox crazy with their frenzied rhythms and unprecedented sexual innuendos. Most critics agree that the poor farm boy with the guitar, Elvis Presley, was the first true rock star, inspiring unprecedented mania and adding a dose of rockabilly rebel swagger to the already dangerous mix. Rock bands kept things pretty tame though, and it took a bunch of English boys to really shake things up. Liverpool's The Beatles - John, Paul , George and Ringo -were just trying to imitate their heroes like Elvis and Chubby Checker. Instead, they turned the world on it's head, while laying the blueprint for how to be a band of international superstars. Fan riots greeted them on every continent. They used their newfound fame to take their sound from innocent melodic pop like "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" to daring and complicated music like "Revolution" and the Indian influenced "Norwegian Wood". Following the 60's British Invasion-The Beatles were followed by the dangerous blues rock of The Rolling Stones and the proto-heavy metal of Led Zeppelin. Rock branched out into countless sub genres. Metal focused on furious guitar virtuosity and bands like Black Sabbath and KISS turned concerts into dark arena spectacles. There were huge rock bands like Queen with their anthems We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions, also Aerosmith with Sweet Emotion and Walk This Way. The punks had noticed that rock was a four letter word. The Clash and The Ramones distilled it to its pure essence, playing fast and angry. Today, rock is still going strong with bands like nu metal acts System of a Down and pop punk combos like My Chemical Romance. They find themselves fighting for chart dominance with dance rockers like Franz Ferdinand or glam revivalists like The Killers.
