The Iowa band Slipknot want to be every nightmare you ever had about an abandoned cornfield. More heavy metal than nu metal, the band play harsh, subversive blasts of aggressive noise, full of grinding guitars and creepy samples. The DJ is there more to provide said samples and ad disturbing, arrhythmic beats than help Slipknot sounds like the next Limp Bizkit. The band has rage to spare and their philosophy towards music making has always been aggressive and hardcore. This, along with a dark sense of humor, is said to have given rise to the band's trademark masks. More than just a gimmick, the masks were supposed to keep Slipknot separated from MTV's cult of beautiful celebrities and keep the focus on their killer songs. At first, the band members wouldn't even reveal their names, instead starkly listing themselves by number. The masks were chosen by individual members as reflective of their personalities and, during the start of their career, the fans themselves struggled to keep the band anonymous, often sending angry emails to anyone who posted pictures of unmasked band members online. Since then, the eight-piece group has gone on to numerous solo projects and their identities have become public knowledge out of necessity. But despite solo pursuits-vocalist Corey Taylor and guitarist James Root in Stone Sour, drummer Joey Jordison in Muderdolls and percussionist Shawn Cahan in To My Surprise-Slipknot continue to pump out their intense, heavy rock as a band. On 2001's Iowa Slipknot give any dark metal classic a run for it's money with raw, inspired tracks like "Disasterpiece" and "The Heretic Anthem."
