Film music refers to soundtrack and original scores that accompany movies. Whether used as ambient or atmospheric melodies or as the single that pops up at a crucial moment to define the mood of the film, film music is a strong genre unto itself because of its relation to another artistic medium. Whatever song or score, film music is inextricably tied to how it is used in the movie. This usage can tinge the meaning of music that we may already be familiar with; for example, the usage of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in ‘A Clockwork Orange’ or ‘Unchained Melody’ in ‘Ghost.’ Film composers, arrangers, and music supervisors create and search for the perfect songs and music to add to the film’s defining purpose and overall arch. Film music can then be considered secondary to the film itself. However, there are several soundtracks that achieved the same popularity as the film itself: Eight Mile, Dirty Dancing, Rushmore, Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction, Pretty in Pink, and Good Will Hunting can each safely be considered classic albums in their own right. Film music generally can offer a different feeling to the visual image. The dueling banjos set alongside the wilderness of ‘Deliverance’ give a humorous but ominous tone of things to come. The music can also send us to the time period most easily; for example, a film set in the early 17th century and accompanied by harpsichords more readily offers us a glimpse of the time and place the film attempts to depict. In all, film music does a marvelous job of enriching the cinematic experience.
