Everyone loves a show tune! It’s hard to explain, but there’s something undeniably appealing about living life on the hoof, capering through the up-tempo numbers and emoting through the big weepers. It’s no accident that the music industry as we know it developed out of New York’s legendary Tin Pan Alley songwriters, when a nation-wide hit would come about via sheet music sales from popular Broadway songs. Musicals as we know them developed as a mix of classical Italian opera—one of the first instances of a song’s content deliberately complimented by orchestration—and old world vaudeville, when performers would put together a variety show that often included musical numbers. Today’s musicals require three elements—the book, the music and the choreography. The classic era of show tunes dates from the 1930’s-1950’s. Different songwriters had their own signature styles—some were witty and urbane, while others were emotional and relied on conventional pop hooks. Golden age classics include the works of Rogers and Hammerstein—the perennial favorite “Blue Moon” from Oaklahoma, “My Funny Valentine” from Pal Joey—Cole Porter—“Night and Day” from The Gay Divorcee and “Begin the Beguine” from Broadway Melody and Kander & Ebb—“All that Jazz” from Chicago and “Cabaret” from Cabaret. Contemporary show tunes have leaned towards the pop end of the spectrum, like Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash hits Evita, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar and Les Miserables and Stephen Sondheim’s wordy Sunday In the Park With George and A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum. Some of the most popular recent show tunes have come from Disney musicals like The Lion King and Tarzan and also from edgy, rock-influenced toe-tappers like Rent by Jonathan Larson and Hedwig and the Angry Inch by John Cameron Mitchell.
