The Angel

About The Angel

Critically acclaimed for pioneering a sound that is both urban and electronic, Brooklyn native and Los Angeles transplant, by way of London, The Angel has charted unparalleled ground as a woman in the male-dominated music industry. Her work spans many genres and encompasses her skills as a record producer, programmer, remixer, DJ and film composer. She is one of the new wave of independent artists, who has founded her own production company and record label, Supa Crucial Recordings. Growing up in Brooklyn, The Angel was heavily influenced by the club records of the early 80s, encompassing both hip hop and the new wave of British sounds, making their impact on the NY dancefloors. Moving to London, Angel began her experimentation with music programming and production. This led her to recording projects in Los Angeles, and eventually remixing artists as diverse as The Pharcyde, The Brand New Heavies, Spearhead, Donald Byrd, DJ Food and Frente. As a film composer, The Angel whet her appetite with additional scoring for the films "Gridlock'd" and "'Til There Was You," The Angel scored her first entire movie, "Boiler Room," in 2000. For this film, The Angel created a palette of sounds that would not only give the film emotional support, but also seamlessly weave in and around the featured songs of Pharoahe Monch, Slick Rick, Tribe Called Quest and others. Other recent film projects scored by The Angel include "Let's Get Frank," a documentary about Massachusetts Congressman, Barney Frank and the Clinton impeachment hearings, and "Foto Novelas: Junkyard Saints" created by "Price Of Glory" director, Carlos Avila for PBS, the documentary, "The Heart Of The Game" (Miramax) due for release in 2006 and the new UK feature, "Kidulthood," also due for release in 2006. The album "No Gravity" by The Angel, released on her own Supa Crucial Recordings label (distributed by New Line Records), was released in 2001. This urban/electronic album featured guest vocals from long-time collaborators Mystic, Tre Hardson (The Pharcyde), Navigator (The Freestylers), Divine Styler and Cokni O'Dire. The acclaimed album received extensive coverage ranging from NPR's "Morning Edition" to the Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly front cover and an appearance on "The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn." Also recording under the name 60 Channels, in March '04, Supa Crucial Recordings released "Covert Movements" a follow up to the 1998 album, "Tuned In Turned On." 60 Channels mixes drum 'n bass against jazz, hip-hop and dub with expertly crafted melodies and poignantly personal lyrics. The new album, features long time collaborators Angie Hart (Frente) and MC Navigator (the Freestylers) alongside some new up and coming vocalists. Since '98 The Angel has spent time on the road DJ'ing at events as diverse as the very first Coachella, the Love Festival, SXSW and Billboard Dance Music Summit. Adding mentor and producer to her project mix, The Angel has been championing the tremendous talents of Bay Area artist, Mystic, among others. The Angel brought Mystic to the attention of GoodVibe Recordings and negotiated Mystic's first record deal. In August 2001, GoodVibe/Interscope released Mystic's debut album, "Cuts For Luck and Scars For Freedom," containing tracks produced by The Angel. The Angel is currently recording songs for a new album to coincide with the release of her film projects in 2006 www.theangelsoundclash.com
