Reggae has its cultural origins in the 1960’s in Jamaica, combining African and Caribbean sounds with soulful American rhythm and blues. The formation of the genre was never distinct, as it gradually evolved from several musical forms such as ska, mento and rocksteady. The 1960’s saw ska's popularity steadily grow in Jamaica alongside Rastafarianism, which spread rapidly in impoverished urban areas as well as the often politically radical music scene. Reggae music’s original message has been historically synonymous with the Rastafarian movement. Most consider Bob Marley responsible for bringing to popular culture the blend of Reggae music with Rastafarian beliefs, making it the popular sound that it is today. Bob Marley and the Wailers rose to worldwide acclaim in the 1970’s with songs such as “No Woman No Cry”, “Stir it Up” and “Buffalo Soldier”. His messages were positive and upbeat, filled with themes of freedom from political oppression as well as messages of love and peace. Other top reggae bands of that generation include Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, and Toots & the Maytals, all of who shared these beliefs while attributing to the popularity of Reggae's unique sound. After Marley’s death from cancer in 1981, his album Legend(1984) became the best-selling reggae album ever, with sales of more than 12 million copies worldwide. Today, Reggae’s sound lives on through the music of bands such as UB40, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, and the Toots & The Maytals. The Maytals, possibly responsible for coining the word Reggae, with 1968’s “Do The Reggay “ are still touring and have received a 2004 Grammy in the category of Best Reggae Album for their release True Love .
